Solie was the third of six children born to John and Liddy Murrell. He is found in the 1870 census in Elk Fork, Pettis, MO, with his parents and siblings. His father died just before the 1880 census, so Solie is listed with his widowed mother and sibling at age 13. He continued to farm and stayed with his mother, and never married. She remarried in 1882, and had two half-siblings to Solie. He died at the age of 52.
