"This story begins in 1790, when two brother, John and William Mathis came from Ireland to Virginia. A short time afterwards they separated. John going to Texas and William to Kentucky, finally settling on Brush Creek in Green County, where he met and married Hepsiba Philpott.

To this union were born eight childrn, five girls and three boys; four of the children were married and settled near their parents, viz., Mary who married Moses Parker, Jemima, who married Dobson, Hepsey who married William Manly, and William who married Elizabeth Duke.Source: Newspaper article written by Judge A.J.
