Served in the Army from 1943-46, 1949-90 and was a logistics officer in the Quartermaster Corps. In addition to the United States, he served in Japan, Germany and Italy. In 1968 he was awarded the Legion of Merit (for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service).


He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va. and former board member/secretary of The Louisville Boat Club. His brother was an attorney in Louisville. He and Helen last lived at 5918 Lomack Court, Alexandria, Va.


During the Great Depression he took some courses at the University of Louisville and the American Institute of Banking. He worked as a reporter for the Louisville Herald Post newspaper, 1933-34, trained as a cub barge pilot for Carnegie- Illinois Steel Co., 1934-1937, was credit manager for the Louisville Trust Co., 1937-40, and was purchasing agent and later office manager for Willett Furniture Manufacturing Co., 1939-43, 1946-49. Early in life he for a time was a collector of rare books.
