Former Brownville police chief recalled
DOVER-FOXCROFT - He was considered a very generous and compassionate person, a man who would work to settle disputes on the home front rather than arrest feuding parties.Former Brownville Police Chief Arthur R. Berce, 65, who died Sept. 16 at his favorite fishing spot at Little Jo Mary Pond, was remembered for his years of public service Monday.
Berce served with the Brownville Police Department for 19 years and was a Piscataquis County deputy sheriff.
Numerous law enforcement officers and firefighters attended Berce's funeral and flanked the entryway to Lary's Funeral Home before and after the funeral service.
"Law enforcement is a family and once it has been brought together it will stay together at almost all costs," the Rev. Dana Miller of Milford, N.H., formerly of Dover-Foxcroft, said Monday in his eulogy. Miller, who also serves as chaplain for a New Hampshire police department, worked with Berce while both were employed part-time with the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Department.
Miller said that at one time or another, police officers get called all sorts of names and he recalled that Berce got tagged as "Uncle Awful." He noted that, like all police officers, Berce touched the lives of many by offering a hand, but those acts of kindness were not filed in a report or reported to the press.
"He was a tough Andy of Mayberry," Piscataquis County Deputy Chief Dave Roberts said of Berce.
Piscataquis County Sheriff John Goggin recalled Monday that Berce did not assert his authority like some young officers do now. "I think of Art as one of the older style-type officers," one who would settle disputes rather than arrest people, he said.
