Dr. John Chatley Buchanan, 88, a retired dental surgeon, formerly of 2033 Washington Blvd., Wilson, died Tuesday in the Swaim Health Center, Newville, Cumberland County, Pa. He had resided at Green Ridge Valley Newville.

Dr. Buchanan practiced dentistry in Easton's Alpha building for 34 years before retiring in 1961. He was former chief of oral surgery at Warren Hospital and a former assistant chief at Easton Hospital.

Born Aug 4, 1898, in Centralia, Pa., he was a son of the late John and Margaret Griffeth Buchanan.

A 1925 graduate of Temple School of Dentistry, he interned at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.

He served as dentist at Northampton County Prison for 10 years, and also for the Wilson Area School District. He was dentist emeritus of Easton Area High School.

Dr. Buchanan was a past president of the Lehigh Valley Dental Society and the Easton Dental Society; former vice president of the Second District of the Pennsylvania Dental Society and former president of the Wilson Civil Service Board.

He served in the U.S. Army's 100th Air Squadron during World War I. He was aboard the Tuscania when it was torpedoed in the Atlantic. He later served in England, France, and Germany.

Dr. Buchanan was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Easton.

His wife, Marion Rader Buchanan, died in 1974.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Schubert and Dorothy Petersen, both of Harrisburg; a brother James, Philadelphia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Interment in Northampton Memorial Shrine.
