Anti-slavery campaigner and philanthropist. Brought about end of slavery in French colonies in 1848. Originally buried in Pere Lachaise cemetery. Entered Pantheon in 1949 to celebrate centenary of abolition but as he had specifically requested in his will to be buried with his father Marc. The latter was also transferred.
