Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Union Army in the 88th Indiana Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on March 19, 1865 at Bentonville, North Carolina. His citation reads "In the face of a galling fire from the enemy he voluntarily returned to where the color bearer had fallen wouned and saved the flag of his regiment from capture."
