U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of West Virginia, in 1876, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced the practice of law in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Entering politics, he was city solicitor of Fort Dodge, (1880-87). In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1900. After leaving Congress, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John H. Gear in 1900 and was reelected serving until his death at age 52. Dolliver Memorial Park Fort Dodge, Iowa, is named in his honor and Congressman James I. Dolliver was his nephew.
