Iowa Governor, U.S. Senator. During the Spanish American War, he served as a Private in Company D, 3rd Michigan Regiment, U.S. Army and also served in World War I, on the Mexican border with the Iowa National Guard. After leaving the Military, he worked as a rancher in Colorado, a farmer in Iowa and settled into a successful career in the automobile business in Des Moines, Iowa. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat the 26th Governor of Iowa, serving (1933-37). During his terms, the problems that resulted from the Great Depression were addressed, a financial control act was advocated that would manage and condense state expenses and a law was passed that aided financially unstable banks. After leaving office he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1937-43).
