Japanese professor of forestry, and "Father of Dendrology in Japan". Founded the Imperial Japanese Forestry Academy at Ôji.

Born Ôno Hazama into a samurai family of the Chôshû clan. Shortly before the fall of the last shogun, he took shelter in the home of his brother-in-law, Nagamatsu. There, he changed his name to Matsuno, a combination of (Naga)matsu and (Ô)no. (Many years later he was baptized, and given the Christian name "Johannes".)

He studied German at Kyoto, and at 22, went to Tokyo where, in late 1870, he was selected to acompany Prince Yoshihisa Kitashirakawa-no-miya to Germany for further studies in Berlin . There he studied Agricultural economy and forestry sciences. He returned to Japan and founded the Imperial Japanese Forestry Academy at Ôji, and a forester school. He was appointed Chief Counselor of Forestry as well as professor and director. Later he was appointed professor at the University of Tokyo.

While in Germany he met Clara Zitelmann, whom he married in Tokyo in 1876. Together they were the parents of Frieda Fume (Matsuno) Ohly.
