Mrs. Alfred H (Lucy Elizabeth) Putnam, Valparaiso's first Woman of Distinction and a leader and organizer of many community organizations, died at Porter Memorial Hospital Thursday evening.

Mrs. Putnam, 92, had lived at 403 Lincolnway for more than 65 years, before moving about a year ago to Whisper Pines Home for Senior Citizens, of which she was a founder.

Mrs. Putnam organized the Porter County Red Cross chapter and served as executive secretary during World War I.

A Past Matron of Eastern Star, she organized the Past Worthy Matrons club, Order of Eastern Star, Valparaiso. She also helped organize and chaired the Community Concert Association.

Mrs. Putnam was a life member, charter member, and past president of the Porter County Historical Society and she was a past regent of William Henry Harrison Chapter D A R.

A founder, past president and life member of the Valparaiso Woman's club, she was also a former vice president and recording secretary of the Indiana Federation of Clubs. She had served as president and vice president of the tenth district Federation of Clubs.

Mrs. Putnam was a member of Chaplain Brown Woman's Relief Corps, Woman's Republican Club, and WSCS of First United Methodist Church.

Born in Ashkum, Ill, Dec. 1, 1880, Mrs. Putnam was the daughter of Charles C and Minnie (McNary) Doty. She attended Ashkum public schools, Grand Seminary at Onarga, Ill, and Valparaiso University where she earned the B S degree in 1902.

She taught for four years in the Ashkum area.

She was married to Alfred R Putnam of Freemont, Ohio, Feb. 5, 1905, he died in 1942.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Michael g (Alfreda) DeGrazia, Phoenix, Ariz; two granddaughters, Mrs. James A (Judy) Brieger, Montrose, Mich, and Mrs. Anthony J (Donna) Grabowski, Valparaiso, and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ida M Cook, Valparaiso, a brother, Albert Doty, Albuquerque, NM, and two young brothers.
