US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent Missouri's 10th District in the Forty-fourth Congress, he served from 1875 to 1877. Born near Basil, Ohio, he was trained as a tanner and studied law on his own, gaining admission to the Ohio bar in 1856. Two years later he settled in Trenton, Missouri, where he was a practicing attorney and School Commissioner for Grundy County (1859 to 1861). At the start of the Civil War DeBolt entered the Union Army as a Captain of Company A, 23rd Regiment, Missouri Volunteers. He was captured at the Battle of Shiloh (April 6, 1862) and held prisoner for 18 months; upon his release he had to resign his army commission because of poor health. In November 1863 he won election as judge of Missouri's Eleventh Circuit Court, resigning on January 1, 1875 to take his seat in the US House of Representatives. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1876, and after completing his term he returned to his private practice in Trenton.
