Dick J. NELSON, 79, of 10589 S. Hoosier Ave., Silver Lake, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday at his residence.
Dick was born Oct. 20, 1930, in Akron to Alford and Iva (Perry) Nelson. He was married May 16, 1959, in Fort Wayne to Iva VanDoren, who passed away Dec. 6, 2002.
Dick was a machinist at Gripco Fasteners of South Whitley for 30 years.
Dick graduated from Laketon High School in 1950 but had also attended Mentone and Warsaw. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. He loved IU basketball. Dick also wanted to make a special thanks to all of his caregivers over the years.
Survivors include his sister, Isabelle Floor, Elkhart; two brothers, Paul Nelson, Columbus, and Oliver and wife Sandy Nelson, Elkhart; sister-in-law Joyce VanDoren, Akron; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Lewis, Devere, Bruce, Dorwin, Robert, Earl and Stanley Nelson; and five sisters, Jane Harter, June Barrett, and Coleen, Julia and Karen Nelson.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Ed French officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be performed by the VFW and American Legion of Rochester.
