Mildred W. Stoops, 94, of Elkader, IA, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at the Elkader Care Center, following a long illness.

Mildred W. Stoops was born October 7, 1909 in Boardman Township; she was the youngest of Joseph J. and Mary Jane (Ehrhardt) Kuehl's 10 children.

Her brothers and sisters preceding her in death were: Arthur, Fred, George, Francis Scullen, Marie Riemer, Carrie Riemer, Kate Baars, Hilda Keleher and Louise Klink.

In 1936, Mildred married Malcolm C. Stoops of Elkader. He preceded her in death in 1991 after 54 years of marriage.

Mildred grew up in the Elkader area and except for a brief time in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho with Malcolm during his Navy years, she spent all her adult life in Elkader. Her father, Joseph, was president of the church council when Peace Church of Elkader was built. She was baptized and married in Peace Church and remained active there until her health declined just a few months ago. Attending church on Sunday was the highlight of her week. She enjoyed Women's Fellowship and was a member of the Deborah Circle. She served on the East Side Cemetery Board for several years. Mildred worked for the ASCS Office in Elkader for 28 years, retiring in 1972. Following her retirement she enjoyed attending NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees) meetings and was active in VFW Auxiliary, serving as president for several years. She served on the Care Review Committee of Scenic Acres for 21 years and visited with residents of the Elkader Care Center frequently. She enjoyed the meals and fellowship at the Elkader Meal Site for many years.

Survivors are her son, Curtis and Ardell (Lange) Stoops, Bella Vista, Arkansas, two grandchildren, Chris of Dallas, Texas and Collin of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and "good neighbor Linda Collins".
