Joe C. Hanna, 83, was elected to the House of Representatives in 1970 and served seven terms until 1984.

HIs family moved to Wichita Falls where he graduated from Wichita Falls High School. He attended John Tarleton Agriculatural College in 1940 and transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where he entered pre-law. Hanna joined the US Navy when World War II broke out. He served as a fighter pilot, flying off carriers in the North Atlantic. He commanded the San Luis Obispo Naval Air Station with a rank of Lieutenant senior grade.

After the war, Hanna returned to Breckenrdige where he purchased the Stephens County Abstract Company, which he owned 25 years.

He was a licensed real estate broker, appraiser, leasing for oil and gas. He served on the Breckenridge ISD board as a member and president for 13 years. He was director of the First Federal Savings and Loan and was a former Breckenridge Citizen of the Year.

As a state representative, Hanna served as chair of the Southwest Regional Energy Council, Texas Energy and Resources Committee and was appointed to the Interstate Oil Compact Commission by four different governors.

He served as Chair of the House Energy Committee for 10 years and later served as a consultant for the Independent Oil and Gas Producers of Texas.

After retirement, Hanna was active in ranching in Stephens County.

Hanna was a member of the Lions Club for 57 years.

Survived by his wife - Betty Hanna; sons - Steve and Mark Hanna; one daughter - Judi Hanna; two sisters - Roy Ann Weems and Madie Hanna; seven grandchildren.

Services were held at the First United Methodist Church.
