Edward was the son of Jared Armstrong and Eliza Bennett. He married Delia on September 24, 1874. In 1900 they had 7 children and 5 were still living: Leola (1876), Omer (1879), Hubert (1881), Glenada (1885), Roberta (1886), Fanny (1887), Ralph (1890), and George D (1895, Merle Downing).

Guthrie Center Times - Thursday , December 26th, 1935 - Edward A. Armstrong, son of Jarad and Eliza Armstrong, was born at Frenchton, West Va., on December 29, 1852 and died in Guthrie Center, Iowa on December 17, 1935, aged 83 years, 11 months and 18 days. When a young man he came to Illinois where he worked on a farm, studied and taught in the public schools. He was baptized by the Rev. J. Lyda on May 8, 1854.

On September 24, 1874 he was united in marriage to Adelia A. Church and to them were born -seven children, two of whom preceded their parents in death, Mrs. Armstrong passed away on May 1, 1920.

It was in the seventies when the Armstrongs first came to Iowa and located in Melville township, Audubon county. Mr. Armstrong was a self educated man and studied as he worked. He taught 66 terms of school mostly in Audubon and Guthrie counties. He was for several years a trustee of the Bear Grove Community church. Mr. Armstrong was Assessor of Bear Grove township many years and held other township offices from time to time.

Soon after Mrs. Armstrong's death in 1920, Mr. Armstrong moved to Guthrie Center and spent the balance of his life in the Real Estate and Insurance business. Mr. Armstrong was a good writer of local events and was correspondent for the Guthrie newspapers for many years writing under the caption of "Southwest Guthrie," and many of the old time residents not only knew him .well but called him "Southwest Guthrie."

He leaves his five children: Leola Sonebreaker, Baker township; Homer Armstrong, Glenada, Oregon; Roberta Cowden, Casey, Iowa; Fannie Sumner, Berkeley, California; George Armstrong, Guthrie Center, Iowa; with twenty-five grand children and twentthree great grandchildren; also two brothers and three sisters: Robert, Matilda and Mary of West Virginia; David in Colorado and Martha in Ohio.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Guthrie Center on Thursday afternoon,
December 19, 1935 at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by John F . Rex, pastor of the church. Interment was made at Exira, lowa.
