William A. Ackerman of Media

William A. Ackerman, 94, of Media, formerly of Hershey Mills, Chester County, died October 2, 2011.

Born and raised in Edwardsville, Ill., Mr. Ackerman graduated from the University of Illinois with a chemical engineering degree in 1938.

He served in the U.S. Army for five years during WWII, in both the United States and the Pacific Theater as Captain in the anti-aircraft artillery. He worked for Sun Oil Company as a refinery engineer for 36 years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Ackerman was a member of several professional organizations and did volunteer work for five years following his retirement. He was a longtime member of the Media Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golf, traveling, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy V. Ackerman; son, Dr. William A. Ackerman II (Kimberley) of Loveland, Colo.; daughters, Carol V. Constantinou (John) of Kennett Square and Mary Luise Gunn (Reginald) of Tiger, Ga.; sister, Eva Theuer of Grand Junction, Colo.; six grandchildren, George, Virginia and Stephen Constantinou, Alex Ackerman, Richard Gunn and Heather Walker; and is also survived by three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, at Media Presbyterian Church, 30 E. Baltimore Ave., Media, PA 19063. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Burial will be private.

Contributions may be made to the Media Presbyterian Church or to a charity of choice.
