U.S. Congressman. He attended St. Peter’s Academy, taught school for several years in Sussex County and engaged in the dry goods business in Washington, D.C., (1862-65). Graduating from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1868, he then practiced medicine in Frankford, Delaware. He was the deputy collector of customs for the Port of Lewes, (1877-88) and acting assistant surgeon in the U.S. Marine Corps Hospital Service, (1890-93). In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses, serving until 1909. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of medicine and was the director of Lewes National Bank, until his death at age 85.
