German doctor and professor of surgery.


Born into a pharmaceutical family in Germany. An oyatoi gaikokujin (foreign contract employee) of the Japanese government, he was employed at the University of Tokyo, Medical Department, as Professor of surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, and medical jurisprudence. He was also the head of the surgical division of the university hospital. Together with Erwin Baelz he belonged to the first group of medicine professors at the University. In 1901, he resigned teaching and became chief surgeon of St. Luke's hospital in Tsukiji, Tokyo, until his death.

He married a Japanese national; together they had three sons.
