Daughter of Robert Walker Irwin, decendent of Benjamin Franklin; and Iki Takechi, a Japanese noblewoman.
She graduated from Columbia University Teachers College. She returned to Japan in 1917, founding the Gyokusei Training School for Kindergarden (now The Irwin School). Born without citezenship (because her father was American), she became a naturalized Japanese citizen in 1942.

Inscription
玉成
アルウィン先生のご生涯を讃えて
おさなごの如くならずば、天国に入るを得ず
子供のようにならないと天国へ行けない
(The inscription begins with a ceremonial expression of a request for help in a successful endeavour, followed by an expression of respect for Teacher Irwin's life, and suggests that one must be a child, or become childlike to enter heaven.)
