Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 27th Kentucky (Union) Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war of the rebellion, and for personal gallantry in leading his regiment in the assault of the enemy's position on the Moulton and Dallas Road and Kennesaw Mountain, capturing and holding the position (although greatly outnumbered) until reinforced by the command to which he belonged, June 27, 1864". After the war he became noted as a portrait painter.
