U.S. Senator, Massachusetts Governor. Born in Dalton, Massachusetts, he attended Wilbraham Academy and was owner of the Crane and Company paper manufacture. A popular Massachusetts figure, he served several times on the Republican National Committee and was 37th Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, (1897-1900). Securing the Republican gubernatorial nomination, he was elected the 40th Governor of Massachusetts and served (1900-03). After completing his term, he stayed politically active, serving as a Republican member of the U.S. Senate, (1904-13). Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he resumed his previous business interest until his death at age 67 in Dalton, Massachusetts.
