John Wilson Whisman was born Jan 20, 1796 in Cripple Creek, Wythe County, Virginia to Philip Whisman and Elizabeth Copenhaver. Although it is believe he was born in Cripple Creek, his parent were actually married in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Feb 17, 1795 - 400 miles away. The family moved to Union county, Indiana in about 1820 and John married Hannah Maria King there on May 6, 1821. Hannah was the grand-daughter of James Stewart, a close friend of the famous explorer Daniel Boone, and Hannah Boone, younger sister to Daniel.

By 1830 John and Hannah had moved to Jackson County, Missouri and by 1846-1848 they were in California where John is listed as serving under Capt William Findlay's battalion during the Mexican War. They at various times lived in Fremont, Monterey and Saratoga.
