BELOVED PRIEST CALLED BY DEATH

Rev. T. O. Durbin, of Calvary Died Following Illness of Two Months.

The Rev. Thomas O. Durbin, 52 years old, for the past two years, pastor of Holy Mary's church at Calvary, died Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville where he had been undergoing treatment. Two months ago he suffered a paralytic stroke but following it he seemed to improve and two weeks later he was taken to the hospital in Louisville. He continued to improve and last week it was planned to bring him home. However, just before the time set for his return complications involving his heart developed and he afterward gradually grew worse until he succumbed.

The body was brought to Calvary Monday evening where it lay in state in the church until Wednesday morning when the funeral was held in the presence of a large number of sorrowing friends. Rev. Father J. A. Hogarty was celebrant at the Requiem High Mass which was held; Rev. Bernatto, of Leitchfield, deacon; Rev. Martin, of Louisville, sub-deacon; and Rev. B. J. Wight, of Finley, master of ceremonies. The acolythes were Rev. Joseph Rives, of Reed, Ky, and Rev. J. P. Haydon, of Holy Cross. Burial was in Holy Mary's church cemetery.

Rev. Durbin, who was a son of Robert and Teresa G. Durbin, was born in Edmondson county on November 11, 1868, and was reared there. He received his education in the schools of that county and afterward was for many years a teacher. A few years after the death of his wife, which occurred in 1909 while they were living at Paducah, Rev. Durbin began studying for the ministry. He was for several years at St. Mary's College and during this time prepared for the priesthood. He was ordained at St. Mary Magdalene church in Louisville on June 19, 1918, and soon afterward came to Lebanon as assistant to Rev. J. A. Hogarty. Later he was transferred to Calvary to succeed the late Rev. Robert McDonald as pastor of the Catholic church there.

During the brief time he was pastor of the Calvary church he greatly endeared himself to members of his parish, as well as many others who knew him. He was an untiring worker and the great good he accomplished is well known to the members of the congragation which he served so faithfully and so well. It was through his efforts that the splendid new school building at Calvary was erected.

Rev. Durbin is survived by five children, four sons, two of whom are studying for the priesthood, and one daughter. His sons, all of whom were here for the funeral, are: Lawrence Durbin, who is studying for the ministry at St. Meinrad, Ind; Paul Durbin, who is also studying for the ministry at Baltimore, Md., and Roy and Cyril Durbin, who have positions with the L & N Railroad Company in Louisville. His daughter is Mrs. John Snyder, of Bedford, Ind.
