Andrés Cota was born at El Fuerte Presidio, Nueva Vizcaya, New Spain, in 1708. He enlisted as a soldado de cuera ("leather jacket") at El Fuerte around 1724 and it was at El Fuerte that he married Angela León about the same time. He was transferred to Loreto Presidio, Baja California, about 1748, where he had been promoted to cabo de escuadra by 1751. Andrés and Angela's four sons, Roque, Antonio, Andrés, and Pablo, all enlisted as soldados de cuera at Loreto and served in Alta California presidios. Their daughters, María Loreta and María Josefa, both married soldados de cuera. Andrés died at Loreto prior to the marriage of his daughter, María Josefa, in March 1762, was buried in the cemetery at Loreto.
