Lime Truck Was Demolished When Hit By Train At Ward Center

Kenneth Bush, 22, of Promise City, Iowa, was instantly killed Tuesday afternoon when the truck he was driving loaded with limestone, was struck by a speeding train at the crossing at Ward Center four miles west of Osceola. The accident occurred about 1:00 o'clock.

Bush, driver for the Floyd Abott Truck Company of Creston, had received a load of agricultural limestone at the quarry northeast of the scene of the accident and was on his way to Creston. Driving south toward the crossing. It is not known how he failed to see the approach of the train, but his truck was squarely on the south track when the locomotive struck it.

The truck disintegrated, parts flying in all directions, and the load of lime disappeared in a cloud of dust.

The train came to a stop 3,308 feet east of the crossing and a portion of the cab and chassis of the truck was removed from the pilot of the locomotive. The body of the driver was found just off the tracks 325 feet east of the crossing. It is not known if he was thrown that far or if the body fell off the truck after being carried to that point.

E. L. Cherry of Ottumwa, engineer of the train, said he did not see the truck approach the crossing. A second before the crash he saw the front of the truck as it came into his line of vision. H. E. Staebler of Ottum was was conductor.

The locomotive was damaged by the impact, but was able to continue under its own power. A relief locomotive was dispatched from Creston to assist the disabled engine should it be unable to continue the run to Ottumwa.

Bush was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Bush of Promise City. The body was brought to the Miller Funeral Home. Wednesday a Corydon mortician arrived and took the body to that city where services will be held.
