Hastings was the oldest son of Captain Henry Arthur and Isabella Mae (Hastings) Dial. They landed at Dial's Landing in Virginia about 1746.

Hastings served as a Colonel in the British Army during the Revolutionary War. On October 30th, 1767, he was given a large tract of land in Laurens, Co by King George III of England.

He was one of the wealthiest men in South Carolina and was a Tory. He was a Baptist and lived in the area of Boyd's Mill-Ware Shoals Road. He is buried in the McDaniel-Dial cemetery near Laurens. The legacy of Hastings Dial and Rebecca Abercrombie Dial to their children was of high character, strong leadership and a substantial fortune.

A note on page 69 of Laurens County, SC cemetery survey for the McDaniel-Dial Burying Ground "According to Mr George Troy Jones, of Laurens Co SC, also buried here are James Abercrombie Jr and Hastings Dial and their wives. Hastings Dial's wife was Rebecca Abercrombie Dial"
