US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1887 to 1891. After being defeated for his Congressional seat in 1890, he served in first the Illinois State Legislature, then the Illinois State Senate. While there he was elected as a Republican Senator to the United States Senate, serving from 1897 to 1903. He left the Senate to pursue his law practice in Chicago, Illinois before once again becoming a candidate for Congress in 1916. Elected to represent Illinois' 2nd Congressional District, he served until his death in office in 1921.
