Bartow Hand was born in Tyler, Texas and completed his schooling at A&M College. He came to Cleburne in 1882 and resided there until his death. He was employed in the freight department of the Sante Fe railway. Later he engaged in the insurance business with his borther-in-law J. W. Lambard. The only survivor mentioned in his obituary was his sister Mrs. Flora Lambard. (Source Cleburne Daily Enterprise, April 8, 1917, pg 1, col. 6) However, his will and probate leaves three houses to his sisters: Flora Lambard, Lilly Kerr, and Lula Reed.

He was married to Clara Bell Jordan in Cleburne in 1885 and then to Iola Clayton in 1905.
