According to his death certificate, which can be viewed at Familysearch.org, his father was William Decker and both of his parents were born in PA. It says that he was a retired shoe maker. His daughter Josephine Arthur was the informant on his death certificate.

William George Decker fought in the Civil War from Ohio. One of the things he did during the war was march with the other Union troops through the Shenandoah Valley in PA. He was discharged after 3 mos. of service due to dysentery.

He was also a carpenter. Some of his descendants still have some of the tools he used. In later years, he won prizes for his vegetable and flower gardens while living in Columbus, Ohio. When in his 90's, his daughter Josephine Arthur would take him to the garden where he would sit on a stool and plant. He was so particular that he always measured the distance between the rows with a string and plant along the string. He was said to have known most of the Bible by memory. His daughter said he knew it "backward and forward" by chapter and verse.
