Enlisted for 6 months service on 9/16/1861 at Mattox, Westmoreland County, VA., he was mustered into 8th Company, 111th Virginia Militia Infantry, as 3rd Corporal.

The 111th Virginia Militia Infantry was called out by Gubernatorial Proclamation of July 13, 1861. Many of the men in this regiment then joined Captain Lucius E. Sandford's Company, 9th Virginia Cavalry, which subsequently became Company A, 15th Virginia Calvary.
