On August 9, 1942 the USS Quincy was sunk by the Japanese in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Samuel J. Bristol, Jr. went down with the ship. He was in the lower compartment of the ship closing off areas that were flooding from the damage of the enemy torpedos that had torn huge holes in the side of the Quincy. He was the first young man to lose his life in World War II from Clay County North Carolina. His body remains entombed in the ship along with the others that went down to a watery grave in the defense of our country. Only one person survived the sinking of the USS Quincy. His parents were Samuel and Nina Evans Bristol.
