George Washington Kidwell was the only child born to John Franklin Kidwell (1838-1894) and his first wife Jane Reed Kidwell (1844-1860). George's mother, Jane, died in Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas when he was just one year old, possibly in child birth. She was only sixteen at the time of her death.

Census records show that George lived with his father and his father's second wife Mary Jane Jeffreys and their children Mary and Lucy in Polk Township, Dade County, Missouri in 1870, and in Laramie City, Albany Territory, Wyoming with his father and his father's third wife, Lucinda Jane Robertson Williams Kidwell and six of his father's other children in 1880.

George married Leola Ethelyn Williams (1870–1950) on November 9, 1884 in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington. Leola was the daughter of George's father's third wife, Lucinda Jane Robertson Williams Kidwell (1840-1899).

George and Leola had seven children, all born in Clarkston, Washington:

Ida Jane "Jennie" Kidwell (1885–1966)
Myrtle Margaret Kidwell (1887–1974)
William Franklin "Frank" Kidwell (1889–1944)
Charles "Charlie" Washington Kidwell (1892–1937)
Edna Edith Kidwell (1894–1971)
Henry Clay "Kelly" Kidwell (1897–1948)
Wilma Susan "Sue" Kidwell (1899–1990)

In about 1907, George and Leola moved their family from Washington to California, where they settled on a farm about 10 miles east of Willows near the Sacramento River. In 1918, they relocated again to Sebastapol, California where George died on October 26, 1922.
