Charles RUEGNITZ

In 1864, he emigrated from Mecklenburg via Hamburg to Clayton Co, Iowa with parents, seven brothers and three sisters with one sister(1YR) dying on the seven week voyage.

He assisted his father with his coopering business near Clayton Iowa, attended public schools and night mechanics school.

In 1868, he went to Minneapolis and Stillwater engaging in coopering. In 1870, he headed to the gold fields of Montana but gave up on prospecting in favor of a job with the Union Pacific Railroad on the sections near Alkali and Julesburg. He then went to Omaha working at the bottom of the Missouri River in cylinder casements till 1871 when he returned to Clayton County, Iowa to become foreman for the Krueger, Werges & Company (a cooperage company). In 1874, he was put in charge of the new Northwestern Hoop Factory in Elkader, IA.

In 1872, he married Emma VENUS. They were parents of Emma, Fritz & Louis.

He was a Democratic Candidate for Iowa State Treasurer but lost. In 1900, he was the Clayton County, Iowa Treasurer.
