Son of William Hazzard Bryan and Lillian Mae Burton Bryan.

Gilbert served as a Private First Class, Company G, 317th Infantry, 80th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided at R.D. 1, Milton, Delaware prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on June 23, 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Gilbert was noted as being employed as a Driver and as Single, without dependents.

Gilbert was "Killed In Action" while fighting with the Infantry in Germany during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.
