U.S. Senator. He graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute New York, then entered the University of Virginia, studied medicine, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, graduated in 1843 and practiced medicine in Kingston, Maryland. He was elected a member of the Maryland State Senate 1854. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in the Union Army. After the war, he was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates 1867 and a member of the Maryland State Senate in 1871. In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1879. After his term, he was into agricultural pursuits until his death at age 60.
