After his schooling, "JJ" worked on his father's farm. In 1907, he bought 140 acres and had the largest farm in St Clair County. The farm was operated by the Gundlach family until 1980 when it was sold to Weatherstone Corporation for development.
"JJ" was treasurer of St Peter's Cathedral and a parish trustee for 19 years. Following the Cathedral fire in January 1912, "JJ" served on the building committee that restored the historic building. "JJ" also served on the building committee for the new St Luke Church built in Belleville in 1928. In addition to these duties, "JJ" was a charter member of the St Clair County Farm Bureau.
When he retired from the farm, "JJ" and his wife, Louisa built a home at 808 Sycamore Street in Belleville, IL.
