Alvina Schmeling Pieper was born June 24, 1853, in Germany and died Dec. 13 at Barron at the age of 91. Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 o'clock at the St. John's Lutheran church at Cameron with the Rev S. Rathke officiating. Interment was made in Sumner cemetery. C. F. Burton had charge of arrangements.
Alvina Schmeling, the daughter of Gottlieb and Wilhelmina Schmeling, was reared in Germany and was married to John Pieper Oct. 3, 1872. To this union seven children were born, four of whom left Germany in 1881. They were Mrs. John(Anna) Casey, Mrs. Will(Bertha) Seemuth, Herman, deceased, and Mrs. Will(Amelia) Egner, deceased.
After arriving in America, they settled in the village of Sumner, where Mrs. O. J.(Ida) Moin, deceased, Mrs. Christ(Helena) Alton and John were born. The family moved to Rice Lake where Mr. Pieper was for several years employed by the Knapp-Stout Co.
Later they purchased 80 acres of land in Sumner township where they built a home and established a farm. Here they resided until the time of their death, Mr. Pieper passing away Oct. 9, 1905. Mrs. Pieper, with the help of her son, John, continued to operate the farm. Two grandchildren, Mrs. Guy(Dorothy) Stearns, and brother, John Moin, resided with their grandmother for about 16 years.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. John (Anna) Casey, Cameron; Mrs. Christ(Helena) Alton, and John, Canton; 25 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.
