Rope Slipped - Used Knife

Pulaski, Oct. 8 - Peter Van Auken, one of the oldest residents of Boylston, made an alleged attempt at suicide last evening by cutting his throat with a jack knife.

Mr. Van Auken is 91 years old and for some time has made his home with his son, Ira Van Auken. The family was absent yesterday, leaving the elder Van Auken at home alone. When members of thefamily returned home last evening the old gentleman could not be found. A lunch which had been prepared for him was not disturbed, having been left where placed by Mrs. Van Auken. A search was made and the old man Van Auken was found in the woodshed. He had secured a dull jack knife and had cut a long, jagged wound extending across the throat, laying bare and piercing the windpipe.

Mr. Van Auken was carried into the house and Dr. Pierce W. Nelson of Orwell was summoned. The physician took twenty-one stitches in the wound. But slight hopes are entertained for his recovery.

When the aged man was found he was semi-unconscious from loss of blood. He afterward rallied and stated that he had attempted to hang hims e lf by throwing a long rope across a beam and attaching it to his neck, but the rope slipped, he said, and he again tried the experiment, the second attempt proving futile. He then secured the knife and cut his throat.

Mr. Van Auken, considering his age, was in unusuailly good health and seemed to be enjoying his declining years. He had been in good spirits and had not complained of feeling unwell and his home surrouudings are of a pleasant character.
