Sirena Tosh was born approximately 1825 near Cushman, Independence Co., AR to William Tosh & Elizabeth Lindsey Tosh. Her obituary stated that she was 95 when she died in 1916, which would have made her birth date 1821. Her age varied with each census. 1825 is on her tombstone. On Aug 1, 1858, in Ind. Co AR she married Thomas J. Barnes, who served in the Union Army in Civil War & died of measles during the war. She was the mother of Phoebe Elizabeth Barnes and William Eli "Bill" Barnes. She also raised Francis/Franklin Marion Barnes as her son. She was called "Aunt Rene" by many people in the area. Several articles have been written about her. She took in several children to raise, usually orphans or woodcolts. Her reputation indicates that she was a feminist of her generation. Excerpts from her obituary state that she died at the home of her son, William, 4 miles west of Cushman. She was born near the place where she died & resided in the vicinity all her life. She was the oldest native resident of the county.
