Gladys Barnett "Meema" Davenport, 90, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Greenville, SC, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was born July 1, 1920 in Greenville, SC daughter of the late Jeptha & Lucile Shannon Barnett. Gladys was a graduate of Parker High School, where she was Drum Major for the Band (which participated in the International Music Festival in 1937) and voted "Best All-Round Girl" in her Senior Class. She was also the pianist for the school Orchestra and Chorus. Mrs. Davenport later studied at Carolina Business College in Greenville.

She was a devoted and loving wife to the love of her life, C.L."Buddy" Davenport for almost 40 years.

After being a stay-at-home mom for 16 years she later moved to Charlotte where she worked for Westinghouse Corporation for nine years before retiring as an Administrative Assistant from Celanese Corporation after 15 years of service. Her retirement time was concentrated on her five children, nine grandchildren, thirteen great children and one great-great grandchild.

Gladys was a woman of great faith and inner strength, a longtime member of Sharon Baptist Church, attending faithfully until health issues kept her at home. She was a loving and selfless mother and grandmother, a devoted sister and steadfast friend. Gladys was a testimony to prayer and the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. She was an avid gardener and took great pride in her yard and flowers. Mrs. Davenport's other passions were listening to good music, bird watching and traveling, as well as enjoying her family and many friends. Her everlasting memory will be cherished by all who knew her.

She is survived by: brother Bennie Barnett (Hazel); daughters Shannon Emila Davenport, Jane D. McCurry (Gene), Polly D. Dyer (Michael), Martha D.
