Joseph was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He first married Julia Keefe. They had 4 children: Kate, Marie, Daniel and Joseph W. Kate died in Philadelphia, and the other 3 children are shown in the picture on the right. After Julia's death, Joseph a foreman in a stocking weaving company, moved west. He married Elizabeth Mitchell in Chicago on December 22, 1888. He and Elizabeth were the parents of Jeanette Sutcliffe who was born in 1891. Jeanette married first Carl Gillard and later Charles H Burnett.
