Richard Eugene Olson was born on November 8, 1954, in Waterloo, Iowa. He was the fourth of five children born to Ralph Edward and Evelyn Marie(Svejda)Olson. His father, who was also known as "Pinkie", worked in construction for Roth and Associates for many years and in 1957 the family moved to Pella, Iowa. Richard attended the Pella Public Schools and graduated from Pella High
School with the Class of 1973. Dick, as he became known, enjoyed playig football and sports remained a lifelong interest of his. He played slow pitch softball and loved to watch and attend football games, especially the Kansas City Cheifs. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Dick met Carol Lou De Vries through mutural friends and on September 20, 1974, they were united in marriage at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella and to this union three daughters were born: Shari Dee, Shawna Rene and Sharesa Dawn. He and Carol shared a married lifetime together operatin a vending machine business in a couple states. He became known as the "gumball man." They loved to ride their Gold Wing motorcycle together for pleasure. Just this past week they enjoyed taking a trip to Missouri. Dick's favorite place was their home near Reasnor, Iowa where he passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 30, 2011, just prior to his 57th birthday. He fought a courageous battle these past 4 1/2 years, many hospitalizations and much pain. Dick and Carol were so thankful for the love and support they received from their family and friends. Carol considered it a privilege to care for his many needs. He was a very gracious patient. We rejoice that he has a new body. Words just can't explain how Dick touched the lives of his family through the good times and the bad, the laughter and the tears. He will be remembered as a faithful husband to Carol for 37 years, as a Dad to his three daughters and their husbands, and a Papa to his eight precious grandchildren who were his pride and joy. Dick is survived by his wife, Carol Lou(De Vries)Olson, his children, Shari and Tim Westercamp and their three children: Mason, Avary and Elise of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Shawna and Elden Van Zee and their two sons: Mitchell and Connor of Newton, Iowa; Sharesa and Jason Van Arendonk and their three children: Caleb, Adalynn and Nora of Pella, Iowa. Dick leaves his sister, Dianna L. De Heus of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and two brothers: Daniel Olson and his wife, Judy of Zephyrhills, Florida and Edward Olson of Pella; his parents-in-law, Tom and Viola(Hasselman)De Vries of Pella; and the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Dennis and Karen De Vries, David and Kae De Vries of Reasnor, Iowa, Fred and Lela De Vries of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Linda(De Vries)and John Cowling of Trenton, Missouri; along with many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Olson, on December 10, 2004, his mother, Evelyn Olson, on December 30, 2007; and his oldest brother, Randolph(Randy)Olson in a tragic auto accident on March 23, 1968. Dick was baptized at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella where he made public profession of his faith at the age of 18 years. He was currently a member of Federated Fellowship Church in Pella where he attended regularly and dearly loved. Dick had a dimension often times only recognized by his family, in that he was artistic, wrote loving poems and memorable notes. He enjoyed fireworks and will be remembered as a prankster who loved to play practical jokes. He saw his grandchildren almost weekly and this was a highlight of the week for him and the grandkinds. Though he will be greatly missed, we rejoice in knowing he has entered his eternal home.
