Idaho Governor, U.S. Senator. Immigrating to America, with his family in 1867, he later settled in Idaho, in 1881 and became one of the largest sheep owners in the Territory. Entering politics, he was chairman of Idaho's Lincoln County Republicans, in 1896 and was a president of the Idaho State Senate, (1900-04). In 1904, he was elected as a Republican the 7th Governor of Idaho, serving until 1909. During his tenure, the state land department was restructured, a state banking department was founded, funding was secured for a new library at the State University, increased financial assistance was provided for educational developments, a commission was created to draw up plans for a new capitol and labor disputes and violence in the Coeur d'Alene mines were addressed. After leaving office, he was elected a Republican to the United States Senate, in 1921 and served until his death from cancer at age 68.
