French Politician. Born the son of French Prime Minister Eugène Caillaux, in LeMans, France, he obtained a law degree in 1886 and then joined the Finance Ministry as a deputy inspector. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1898, he was an expert on economic matters and served as Minister of Finance, (1899-1902, 06-09). He served briefly as Prime Minister, (1911-13) and opposed the French participation in the advent of the First World War. As the leader of the French Radical party, he was imprisoned for an alleged conspiracy in 1918, was acquitted of charges of treason but found guilty of external security of the state, received a three year prison sentence and granted an amnesty in 1924. In 1927, he achieved renewed prominence in parliament and was appointed head of the Commission of Finance. He returned to the briefly to the Finance Ministry in 1935 and retired from politics in 1938. He died in Mamers, France, at the age of 81.
