Adelbert Frank "Bert" Nichols came to Thomas county in 1889, to "prove up" his land northeast of Gem, Kansas. To this home within a year he brought his young wife, Laura Elsie whom he had married in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She, however, could not adjust to the lonesome pioneer life, and in late 1890 this marriage culminated in divorce. Born to them in early 1890 was a daughter who died in infancy and is buried in the Cumberland cemetery.
