Freret was the son of John & Annette (Vienne) Freret of New Orleans. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, and died in hospital August 4, 1863. His remains were re-interred here some years after the war, probably at the instigation of Louisiana natives, Professor Ernest Lagarde and his wife Leonie. Professor Lagarde taught English for many years at Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Maryland. The delay in re-interring the remains explains the incorrect date of death carved on his stone.
