Sgt William H Garo

Sgt William H. Garo was a soldier of F Company 16th Infantry Regiment 1st Infantry Division. He was killed on 12 July 1943 - not on 2 July 1943 as inscribed on the grave marker - near Gela in Sicily. He was first buried in a fieldgrave near the location he died. He was reburied in the temporary American GELA Cemetery in Sicily in grave G-73-865. Date of burial was 11 August 1943. After the war his remains were repatriated and buried in the All Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Over 1,200 men and women were buried in the GELA Cemetery between 1943 and 1947.

I am writing a book about the GELA Cemetery and hope to finish it in 2015
