John W. Abernathy, 86, of Waleska, died Friday, December 12, at R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services were Sunday, December 14, from Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Peters and the Rev. C.B. Rogers officiating. Burial followed in Old Macedonia Cemetery. Sosebee Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Abernathy was a retired farmer.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kate Bennett Abernathy; seven sons, Billy Abernathy of Woodstock, Junior Abernathy and Sammy Abernathy, both of Canton, Richard Abernathy of Holly Springs, Lawrence Abernathy of Adairsville, Grady Abernathy and Charlie Abernathy, both of Mableton; seven daughters, Mrs. Helen Ragsdale, Mrs. Willine Sheffield and Mrs. Nellie Belle Stansel, all of Canton, Mrs. Flora Setser of Waleska, Mrs. Minnie Denton of Dallas, Mrs. Doris Ellis and Mrs. Betty West, both of Holly Springs; one brother, Elihue Abernathy of Adairsville; one sister, Naomi Abernathy of Cartersville, 54 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Timmy Byess, Michael Denton, Johnny Gibson, Stanley Sheffield, Charles Abernathy and Danny Abernathy.

[NOTES: Son of John Franklin Abernathy and Joicy Evelyn and McGhee; First wife was Isabelle (Bell) Wilson. She died June 13, 1927.]
