Sculptor. He received recognition as a French sculptor. Born Antoine-Augustin Préault in Marais, France, he was one of the great sculptors of the 19th Century, noted for the expression of intense personal emotion in the form of his art. Known during his lifetime as "Auguste Préault', he first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1833, but he was not favorably looked upon by some of the artistic community's elite due to his circle of activists who participated in the French Revolution in 1830. However, his following exhibitions allowed the general public to view the great aspects of his work. Some of his more then 40 sculptures included "Sara Stephann" (1832), "La Mendicité" (1839), "Medallion of Virgile" (1855), "Statues in the gardens of the Château de Versailles" (1856), "The tomb of the actor Rouvière" (1861), "Vénus et le Sphinx/Jupiter et le Sphinx" (1870) and "Ophelia" (1876). He died at age 69 in Paris, France.
